Work zones are an area where roadwork is taking place. These areas may include lane closures, construction workers, signs, and moving equipment. Since these areas can be dangerous for both workers and drivers, it is extra important to be a careful driver.

Work Zones: Drive Safely

Safety

Be on the lookout for orange colored signs that indicate when you are entering and exiting work zones. These signs usually accompany a new speed limit sign, indicating a slower speed while in a work zone. There are higher fines associated with speeding in these areas, so be sure to drive the posted speed limit. Sometimes, the conditions call for you to even drive below the speed limit.

Sometimes, within the zone, the traffic may be controlled by a person holding a sign or a flag. They will tell you which way to travel, and if you should slow down or stop. There may also be barriers, such as cones, to keep cars from going into dangerous areas. For example, sometimes they keep you from driving down a road that is closed, or into ongoing work projects. You may also come upon temporary traffic signals. Make sure to stop on the white line, if present, and follow the traffic signal alerts.

Risks

There can be driving hazards in a work zone. For example, there could be debris on the road. These areas may also have uneven roadways or shoulders. Also, the workers in this area could be on, near, or close to the road. These can all make driving more dangerous in work zones.

Tips

When entering a work zone, you should pay extra special attention. Listen to the posted signs, and follow their directions. You may have to stop suddenly, so watch brake lights on vehicles ahead. Do not tailgate other drivers. If needed, merge into a new lane well before you reach the lane closure. Keep in mind that workers, work vehicles, or equipment may enter your lane without warning. Also, other vehicles may slow, stop, or change lanes unexpectedly. Be patient while driving through these areas. You do not want to get into an accident or injure someone else.

It is highly likely that you will drive through work zones at some point. Be mindful of signs, be aware of your surroundings, and drive carefully. This will help keep you, other drivers, and the workers safe.
